Wie alles anfing
(Preface to the text: In Rhodes, it is customary for us to address each other by our first names. We will continue this custom in our texts.)
Vor Jahren erlebte Rose aus Kornwestheim in Rhodos einen schweren persönlichen Schicksalsschlag. Um ihre Trauer und ihren Schmerz besser bewältigen zu können, entschloss sie sich, im Heim Agios Andreas für Kinder mit besonderem Pflegebedarf kostenlos zu helfen. Und da entdeckte sie bald, dass das Heim in vielen Bereichen Unterstützung braucht. (Davon reden die folgenden Bilder: Kinder im Heim; Bettlägriger; Rollstuhlversammlung. Man könnte an dieser Stelle auch Personen zeigen die uns direkt berührt haben, aber aus verständlichen Datenschutzgründen können wir nur „andeutende“ Bilder zeigen.)
Das brachte sie bald auf den Gedanken, einen Verein zu gründen, der dieses Heim unterstützen kann.
So gründete sie am 28. Mai 2013 in Ludwigsburg zusammen mit Freunden und Bekannten den Verein zur Förderung des Kinderheims AGIOS ANDREAS.
Das zweisprachige Logo (s.o. über dem Titel der Seite) drückt bildlich aus, dass es um ein Zusammenwirken deutscher und griechischer Menschen geht, denen die Kinder und Jugendlichen auf Rhodos, die besondere Hilfe und Zuwendung brauchen, ein Anliegen sind.
Nachdem der Verein noch im selben Jahr anerkannt wurde, hat er seither Anschrift und Titel, samt Kontonummer für Mitgliedsbeiträge und Spenden:

Doch Rose suchte nicht nur in ihrer Heimat Unterstützer, sondern auch vor Ort in Rhodos, vor allem im deutschsprachigen Ökumenischen Begegnungszentrum auf Rhodos.
Dieses Zentrum wird von einem überkonfessionellen Trägerverein geführt.
In dieses Zentrum entsendet die Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland für jeweils 10 Monate einen Pfarrer, eine Pfarrerin oder Pfarrersehepaar zur Seelsorge, für Gottesdienste und andere Tätigkeiten, um so die vielseitigen Aktivitäten dieses Zentrums und seiner Mitglieder zu fördern.
Im Herbst 2014 fand Rose in dem Pfarrersehepaar Irmgard und Bernd Busch aufgeschlossene Mitarbeiter. Sie zeigte ihnen das Heim und machte sie mit den Vorgesetzten bekannt.
Weitere Interessierte aus dem Begegnungszentrum wurden bald in die ersten Aktionen des Vereins zur Förderung des Kinderheims Agios Andreas eingebunden. Als drei neue Kleinkinder ankamen, begannen 3 Frauen (Beate, Carmen und Irmgard) mit regelmäßiger Betreuung einmal am Abend in der Woche. Der Verein sorgte für die Bettchen der Kinder.

Irmgard and Bernd soon discovered that more than just providing material goods, they needed personal support, and that this also applied to other state-run homes. The idea of offering young Germans the opportunity to volunteer for a year of social work was born. So they went on a fact-finding tour with helpers and found the management of the orphanage and old people's home in the city of Rhodes, and the home for the elderly, sick, and disabled in Kolymbia (about 25 km south of Rhodes), to be receptive and very cooperative. It was agreed that four young women would be deployed to the orphanage and the Agios Andreas children's home, and if necessary, also to the city's old people's home.
The volunteers are directly supported by the Greek government by providing them with free accommodation in the orphanage and free meals in the homes.
The City of Rhodes covers the travel costs from the apartment to the Agios Andreas site.
The Stirixi association and the Protestant Volunteer Services sending agency in Hanover share the volunteers' pocket money. The association also covers the costs of language lessons and other expenses for on-site work and its improvement.
Since then, the association, the Protestant Volunteer Services, the management of the deployment sites in Rhodes, the City of Rhodes and the Ecumenical Meeting Centre, together with the local accompanying persons, have been responsible for the deployment of the young women from Germany.
The first pioneering cohort of volunteers was deployed from fall 2016 to summer 2017. You can read about their experiences under "What's Happened So Far."
In addition to this volunteer service, Irmgard's special commitment also increased the number of adult volunteers on site. They visit the Agios Andreas children's home once a week to help distribute dinner and play with the children. The children regularly await their arrival with great joy.
The association raised initial funds for the volunteer service project and other material support, in addition to member contributions, through fundraising events and concerts in Germany. The project was also promoted at the Ecumenical Meeting Center, where Irmgard repeatedly handed out the first brochure about Agios Andreas to visitors after services and explained it (see What has already been done).
